An 'average' child's education experience
18 months-old | May go to local‘toddler club’ or play school. Mostly undirected play. |
3 years-old | Local nursery(morning only) Play, both directed and free-flow, with nursery teacher and assistants. Introduction to literacy and numeracy through purposeful activities. |
5 years-old | StartsKS1 Enters the reception class (usually called Year Reception) and proceeds to Y1 after settling in. Enters Y2 at about six. Takes assessment test to assess levels of outstanding in English, mathematics and science according to QCA criteria. |
7years-old | Starts KS2 (maybe in a new school) Enters at Y3. InY6 takes next set assessment test to assess levels of understanding in English, mathematics and science according to QCA criteria. |
11years-old | Starts KS3 (atsecondary school-always a new school in the state system).Assessment test is in Y9. |
14years-old | Starts KS4 which will end with the taking of General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE). |
16years-old | Atthe end of KS4 pupils can whether to stay at school or not. Further full-time study until they are 18 years is encouraged. It can leadto exam success at AS (academic school), A-level or a vocational qualification. |
18years-old | College,university or work. |
